[Solved] Black Ink 0.151.1634 won't run on Win8.1/64

The app fails to start, although it ran fine under Win7/64 on the same machine.
I'm running the latest BlackInk, downloaded today.
I have the latest DirectX, downloaded today, and I'm running as Admin.

Error msg reads:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Bleank\Black Ink\BlackInk.exe

The application failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please
see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

The folder C:\Users\Allen\AppData\Roaming\Bleank contains two sub-folders:
Black Ink 0.151.1634
BlackInk

The sub-folder BlackInk contains two sub-sub-folders:
Cache
UserBrushes

There is no log or any other file in the BlackInk sub-folder.

try to install this redist and be sure the DirectX install is up to date

Thanks. I installed the VC redist, without any issues. The DX installer says "no installation is necessary."

Still nothing happens when I run BlackInk.

There are quite a few VC 2008 redists installed. I'm hesitant to uninstall any of them, though, for obvious reasons.



Any other ideas would be much appreciated.

The next move is to use dependency walker.
Drag & Drop BlackInk.Exe from the explorer ( the real exe not the shortcut ) into the window of dependency walker and then see if a problem appear ( like a missing DLL ).

Depends reports several errors:



This seems excessive, since everything else on the system is working. It's been too long since I was into VS for me to interpret this.

try to uninstall your C++ 2008 Redistribuable packages and install this one after

While uninstalling the VC 2008 redists, a few questions arose:

1. Is there any need to uninstall the x64 versions?

2. Uninstalling the package called KB2467174 - x86 9.0.30729.5570 requires more permissions than I have, although I am the sysadmin on a single-user machine. Is this important?

I'll proceed assuming both answers are "No" and report back shortly.
